See You Again, Leap Year...

"Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different." - C.S Lewis

It's that time of the year again, to reflect and ponder upon the good and challenging days.

For us, the year kickstarted with a bottle pop of Ice Wine that we got from Germany.

For the traditional Chinese, the year starts with CNY. This year, the whole clan made a trip back to Paddy Land - Kedah. We were tremendously blessed by our aunt who did an extensive renovation to accommodate almost (if not more than) 20 of us in a house.

Being back here is the final touch to our CNY. The wind brings humidity, sweat but also serenity. There's just so much more to embrace and feel like we've nothing to lose unlike the fast paced living in the city.

February 2016 was also the month I firmed up my decision to bid goodbye to professional practice. Months leading up to this were draining because well, cliche as it is, it was a tough decision to make. From convincing the people I love that I knew what I was doing to assessing supportive comments, ensuring they are not saying things merely for the sake of comforting me.

Every step I take in my career, there are takeaways. PwC was the first step out of my comfort zone. Gaining much more than work experiences to shout about, I brought with me friendships I never knew I could have at work, leadership I could look up to.. and of course the competitive environment that I hope my attempts to excel in were evident :)

Being close to tears on my last day, that's definitely a first despite a short tenure. PwC has given me much more in that span of one year... I wrapped up this chapter feeling very grateful and blessed.

March brought me home, again. My mini "career break", some would call it.

I had my daily dose of home brewed black coffee (爷爷泡的茶), chicken shredded noodles (so much so, grams had to distract me with other breakfast goodies available, all of which were unsuccessful), and met my main objective of coming home...

Under the guidance of 符老师 (aka grams), I made my very first Rice Dumplings! What a feat with the technicality and constant practice grams made me go through days before the actual wrapping.

Confession: I've forgotten how to do it already. Shucks!

April 2016 marks an unconventional step in my career.

Unlearning most of what I think I knew and took a bold change into recruitment. As at 31 December 2016, it's 9 complete months in recruitment and I would describe it to be a thrilling, heart wrenching roller coaster ride. Some days are especially so with challenges thrown at you when you least expect it, some days you feel like you're at the top of the world and some days you find yourself striving to stay afloat.

But one thing's for sure, you reap what you sow.

The look of no regrets :)

On top of that, I materialised a secret dream of having my hair colored oddly! An undertone that's bright red. Splurged quite a fair bit for my first time at Number76. Loved how the color turned out to be. Yay!

I also took a flight on my own, for the first time... to Singapore. It was a day of being independent, paranoid and chaos. All for my one and only kor's ROM.

Despite all the drama, I'm glad I made it in time to the venue! With no local contacts available, I bought my own train ticket to the venue, got lost walking around the area and arrived at the venue all sweaty and as soon as I bumped into my kor, hot tears started streaming down my fat cheeks.

It was worth the stress... because my kor and Rebecca (大嫂) looked so good all dressed up. Maybe I cried because I felt like I'm losing my kor hahahaha I kid! :P

May 2016 was my birthday month. Here's one with the initial team, including most of my interviewers.

I'm not big on birthdays, as in I do not like going around shouting about it. Trust me when I say it was an awkward way of how my team was informed about my birthday LOL

But most of all, it ended on a simple note with the love of my life. Last birthday as a single lady! :)

This year is a year of poking candles into food. I kept imagining having ramen as my birthday cake days leading up to it, so I got a candle from donowhere and asked my love if he'd play along with my ramen "cake". Hehe~

June 2016 saw the official launch of the LRT extended line into my hood! Nothing like rejoicing for extra 15mins of sleep now that the station is just a 5-minute drive from home haha

July was another month of celebration.

Rekindled my love for concert with complimentary tickets from Uncle whose academy is the official make up for Jolin Tsai, PLAY tour concert stop in Kuala Lumpur! Invited a concert freshie along with us too (this is you, Shuang). haha

Fantastic showmanship despite the weather which also resulted in a minor slip at the start of the concert!

Attempted canvas painting for the first time too! Can't say I'm a pro but I impressed myself even with end product hahahaha #selfpraise

It was meant as a gift for...

My birthday boy!

Similarly, last birthday as a bachelor! hehe and yes, poke candle into sashimi! #wholenewlevel

September 2016

Did a couple of short trips with my love. Up north to Ipoh, down South to Malacca and further down South to Singapore!

Colorful HDB at Rochor Rd that will soon be demolished

The last quarter of 2016 went by swiftly like the wind because I achieved my first milestone promotion with the Firm (funny how it's still called that)!

I also achieved my teenage dream to have a Mac to call mine! In fact, this post is drafted on it :) Gotta thank my Pappi for instilling in me the habit of "delayed gratification".

Also did my first gelish manicure! I've always not been a fan of my nails but wow... I couldn't believe my nails when the lady was done with it. Didn't know my nails had the potential to be pretty too!

Year in year out, we lament to ourselves that time flies. Thing is, what about 2016 flying past too quickly that you have not done enough yet? Let that kickstart your 2017.

2016 for me in summary has taught me that the impossible is doable. It has been a fruitful year of learnings and it's not enough because 2017 is going to be an even more challenging year with our economy, milestones to achieve etc.

Here's wishing you a Blessed New Year!

See yall next year! Toodles~

The Fish Bowl Poké Shop @ Bandar Sunway

I'm back on my blogging mojo! This time round, with a Hawaiian-inspired bowl of goodness that has recently hit our neighbourhood - The Fish Bowl!

Occupying the same row of shoplots just outside the side gate of Sunway University; down the street alongside White, Orange (mann, now you know how long since I've left college), I'm happy to tell you... this is my kinda health food.

They call it a Poké Bowl, pronounced as "Poh-Kayh".

Not gonna bore you with what wikipedia or Eat Drink KL are gonna tell you.. To me, this is a bowl of wholesome goodness packed with bits of life choices.

Zoom in for more details

True to it's Hawaiian origins

Wide array of toppings, proteins, sides to go with your bowl

Our personal favourite is the Shoyu Salmon and...

...for me, Kaffir Lime Salmon :)

Some of personal favourite of sides to go with it includes mangoes, walnuts, avocado.

Mash em all up!!

This was during the recent Christmas promo where they had complimentary upsize and an additional premium side (: Salmon skin it is! This was also when I had the chance to try the Wasabi Mayo Salmon. Slightly pungent to my nostrils but done just right for wasabi lovers. Not so much for those who doesn't fancy wasabi...

Sauce wise, our all time favourite would be Lime Aioli and Garlic Sauce.

That's how they roll!

Overall verdict: 7/10

It is value for money when it comes to quality, but not so much for the quantity (i.e. portion). That is a compromise I'm willing to make when I'm craving for something healthy. It is light to my tummy yet flavourful to my tastebuds.

Grandeur Cafe, Kota Kemuning

Kickstarting the Raya break with trying out another cafe in the hood - Grandeur Gallery Cafe at Kota Kemuning.

Looked up some cafes, dropped some comments to validate on the opening hours and voila!

Outlook of the cafe

Grandeur Cafe is located next to Sips and Bites but it occupies the floor above. Visibility of the cafe may not be as prominent because of this. Again, nowhere Waze nor Google Maps can't take you to. Just keep an eye out for the signage.

As you walk up the stairs

Menu and the cute deco

We were there about 1030-ish in the morning. Opening hours as per the world wide web is 11:30AM but we thought of just heading up to check it out, to see if they were open. True enough, they were! Will share more on the opening hours below.

Here at Grandeur, you ring the bell. LOL!

Pretty cosy setup, there are more seats behind me

We were their first customers for the day so I had the liberty to go around snapping photos like some pro heh! Couples and families started walking in towards the late morning about 11ish.

I love cute deco

Bar counter

How it works -

Get seated, they'll hand you a menu to look through and decide on your order. Once you've decided, head on over to the counter to place your order.

Note: Cash only for transactions below RM50

Pesto Pasta RM18

Overall rating: 6/10

This was served with thinner version of fettuccine. Pesto paste was alright and as I would say the same for other pesto pastas, it lacked fragrance. Portion was good with a fair share of almond bits which gave a good bite to the pasta.

It came plainly as pasta, pesto and nuts. I wished it came with some grilled chicken slices. For the price of the pasta, I'd say its justifiable due to the portion but some meat would have been better.

Up close and personal

A personal preference of mine would also to have it slightly more oily.

Grand Brekkie RM23

Overall rating: 8/10

Looks decent, tasted grand. Evidently as seen, it comes with toast and baked eggs with bacon, potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, sausage and a side of greens. All in all, it was breakfast well done!

He loved it better as compared to Sips and Bites, but of course, every eatery has their own differentiating factors. Baked eggs with bacon as pictured above lacked flavour, baked potatoes were good, sausage was of better quality and sauteed mushrooms were a lil too scarce lol

Well, there's no one perfect brekkie... :D

Baked eggs with bacon for me was good and I felt that the bacon gave slight flavour to the eggs. Maybe I'm not one who fancies heavy seasoning in my food to begin with.

Tiramisu with Rum and Kahlua RM14

By word of mouth, I ordered this based on the recommendation by a friend.

Overall rating: 8/10

One of the better tiramisus I've tasted by far. Alcohol taste was just right and not too overpowering. Love how the cream doesn't feel as heavy as the calories I'm consuming too! Haha

If you're not a fan of alcoholic cakes like him, you might wanna consider trying out other cakes. Noticed that they've got yam cake on the menu, unfortunately it wasn't available today.

I'm definitely on a roll to try out the cafes in the hood!

Have a blessed Raya, everyone! Safe travels for those who're travelling! :)

Sips & Bites Cafe, Kota Kemuning

Sips & Bites Cafe - today's late lunch hideout in Shah Alam.

Truth is, the cafe fever hasn't been hitting Kota Kemuning very well in the past few years. Yes, there's been cafes popping up here and there but exceptionally good and memorable ones are merely a handful.

So, I am definitely glad KK is catching up with the wave! :) Next to this, one floor above is Grandeur Cafe.

Here's a good one to note -

Outlook of Sips & Bites

The thing with shoplots in KK is that its hidden in nooks and corners, often camouflaged in between other not so prominent shops. A pity, I'd say. Maybe due to the uniformity of shoplots as per the development plan of Paramount. The developer himself must be one OCD fella. LOL
Then again, no place is unlocatable by Waze/ Google Maps these day, huh? ;)

Interior of Sips & Bites

Point to note, we were out for a late lunch at 1600hours+ and this was the situation that greeted us. Full house with one table of four left by the door, as if anticipating our arrival, heh. Even the smoking area outside was fully occupied! Looks like the crazy weather ain't stopping people from taking a puff while having sips & bites ;)

Another side of the cafe taken when I was done with my meal

Full blast air conditioned, we felt like ants hiding in a comfortable nest. Because the tables were arranged quite closely to each other, the atmosphere is definitely drowning with chatter especially those having some loud conversations going on.

Self service corner and baby chairs

Yes, self service but the staff were super alert and came quick like the wind to offer assistance where required. The owners were present too, hosting some friends at one of the tables. :) Service level is definitely better than other cafes I've been.

Big breakfast RM20 (excluding GST)

Overall rating: 7/10

Fluffy scrambled eggs paired with a slice of toast, sauteed mushroomms, pan fried tomato, bacon slices, sausages (quality one!), baked beans were mighty fine, hitting all the right notes on our tastebuds. As for the hashbrown, I felt it lacked taste despite the skin being crispy. It felt soggy and disappointing as soon as I took a bite.

Portion is okay for a lady's appetite (definitely not referring to those petite eaters -.-) but guys would find it not too filling. Well, you could always order an additional side to go with your meal :)

Smoked Salmon Carbonara RM18 (excluding GST)

Overall rating: 7/10

This is Carbonara done right! Looks a lil like aglio olio yet has a hint of milk/ creaminess. It is served generously in portion, good amount of sauteed mushrooms, cheese powder and 2 slices of "smoked salmon". Actually overall as a dish it was good, but the supposedly smoked salmon was a bit not on point? Haha, it tasted good for my tastebuds nonetheless.

For those who are not so fond of fish because of the fishyness that comes with it, I'd suggest for you to try other pasta dishes instead. This came with a slight hint of fishy taste but to me, it was bearable and alright, mainly because I love fish to begin with.

 More photo ops

Banana and Berries Waffle RM18 (excluding GST)

Overall rating: 6/10

We've tasted better and fluffier waffles but for a neighbourhood cafe as compared to if we were to drive to our favourite Waffle World @ One Utama, this does the job.

Waffles are thin yet crispy on the outside. Toppings of fruits (strawberries, berries and caramelised banana OMG) were fresh. I must give credit where it's due and the CARAMELISED BANANA WAS SO GOOD! Love the right amount of maple syrup and chocolate sauce too!

Not too shabby, Sips & Bites ;)

*****

Can you believe 6 months just flew by in the snap of fingers? Felt like it was just a month back that I wrote my last post. So many things have changed since my last post, actually.

Good kinda changes, I'd say. ;)

That's all for now. Till the next time, toodles!
